In closing, I would highly recommend the experience of the shows at the McKittrick Hotel, as well as dining at Gallow Green. I must say, I now feel part of the “club” and wish to guard the secrets just as much as everyone else, but I will tell you that if you surrender to it, it is truly an unforgettable and thought-provoking experience that will leave you wanting more.Īfter the performance (approximately 2.5 hours after I went into the space, which felt like too short even though I was somewhat sweaty and tired from wanting to run in five directions at once) I relaxed and regrouped at the Manderley Bar, which is a Jazz-age vibe cocktail bar with live music that runs during the entirety of the show and afterwards (in which it’s open to the public!) Here I was soothed by the sounds of Julia Haltigan and the accompanying Maximilian Martell Trio, who were impeccable in both performance and atmosphere. I had the treat of interacting with an actor during a scene once I garnered the courage to stand close to him during his performance. The Shakespearean-esque tagline is, “Fortune Favors the Bold,” and it is indeed true. There are some moments you are completely alone in a room exploring its intricacies, and then you will see a scene playing out down the hall which you can choose to follow or not. I also recommend dressing in layers, as there were times I wanted to cool off and others where I wanted long sleeves. I took the advice of the publicist and wore comfortable clothes, and shoes, which is a must, as you are walking up and down stairways and exploring rooms. This satiated and slightly spirited state I was now in was the perfect transition to the Sleep No More experience. After my amazing meal which included salmon, butternut squash, and key lime pie-and maybe another cocktail… I was ready for showtime. But it is this mystery that pulls us to want to know even more. She, like the entire crew, fiercely guards the show’s secrets. I was able to sit with the hotel’s Publicity Envoy, whose enthusiasm for the space and productions held there was truly inspiring. Once in Gallow Green, I was able to enjoy seasonal cuisine and signature cocktails, including the “Sleep No More” which is a beautifully mixed elixir of vodka, elderflower, butterfly-pea flowers, citrus, and cider. I asked the elevator operator how many floors the hotel is, and he replied, “It’s a mystery!” I chuckled, and then realized the ride I was in for. In the elevator, I was able to take postcards advertising each attraction at the Hotel, which were designed in a vintage style and beautifully printed. But you can only be in one, and that is the magic draw of this incredible production that sits inconspicuously amongst art galleries and industrial architecture in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.īefore the show, I dined at the rooftop wonderland also known as Gallow Green, where although still in the dimension of normal reality, the mood seamlessly lends itself to the mysterious noir vibe that resonates throughout the McKittrick Hotel. As the days roll on since I experienced Sleep No More, the more each moment replays in my mind like a tape on repeat, and the more I wish I could have been in five places at once. This theoretical supergroup has a deliciously dark, nervous energy to it, propelled by analog synthesizers popular during the late ’70s and early ’80s. “I was thinking, ‘OK, well, what if Wendy Carlos and Kevin Haskins, the drummer of Bauhaus, who is a friend of mine, and Martin Gore from Depeche Mode and Terry Riley and Syd Barrett were all in a band? What would it sound like?’ So I’m thinking about the people that Natasha is mentioning… a supergroup in my head.” In thinking through the score, he had a jumping off point in Lyonne’s musical inspirations for the season. Composer Joe Wong summarized the score’s ethos as, “We take everything past its logical conclusion and see what happens on that next step.”īut of course Wong needed to account for a couple of different next steps, as Season 2 spans trips not only to the gnarly East Village of the ’80s but also war-torn Budapest in the ’40s and East Berlin in the ’60s. There is a sometimes lurching, sometimes breakneck, sometimes skidding momentum to both the soundtrack and the score of Season 2, not unlike a late-night subway lurching its way towards Brooklyn. Second, jojoba oil is the most similar to human sebum (both being wax esters), and the two are completely miscible. If you have some pure jojoba oil at home, you should be fine using it for years. (Many plant oils tend to go off pretty quickly). Even if you heat it to 370 C (698 F) for 96 hours, it does not budge. So being a wax ester results in a couple of unique properties: First, jojoba oil is extremely stable. 25-30% of human sebum is also wax esters to give us people environmental protection. Wax esters are on the outer surface of several plant leaves to give them environmental protection. Chemically, a wax ester is a fatty acid + a fatty alcohol, one long molecule. Mother Nature also created wax esters but for a totally different purpose. Mother Nature created triglycerides to be easily hydrolyzed (be broken down to a glycerin + 3 fatty acid molecules) and oxidized (the fatty acid is broken down into small parts) - this happens basically when we eat fats or oils and our body generates energy from it. The fatty acids attached to the glycerin vary and thus we have many kinds of oils, but they are all triglycerides. So what the heck is a wax ester and why is that important anyway? Well, to understand what a wax ester is, you first have to know that oils are chemically triglycerides: one glycerin + three fatty acids attached to it. It's definitely one of the best, or probably even the best option out there for sun protection available worldwide. This seems to be true even if the skin is damaged, for example, sunburnt.Īll in all, if you've found a Zinc Oxide sunscreen that you are happy to use every single day, that's fantastic and we suggest you stick with it. But luckily, so far research shows that sunscreen nanoparticles are not absorbed but remain on the surface of the skin or in the uppermost (dead) layer of the skin. We wrote more about nanoparticles and the concerns around them here, but the gist is that if nanoparticles were absorbed into the skin that would be a reason for legitimate health concerns. Still, it's white and disturbing enough to use Zinc Oxide nanoparticles more and more often. Pinnell, it's slightly less white than TiO2. It leaves a disturbing whitish tint on the skin, although, according to a 2000 research paper by Dr. It's also often used to treat skin irritations such as diaper rash.Īs for the disadvantages, Zinc Oxide is also not cosmetically elegant. So much so that Zinc Oxide also counts as a skin protectant and anti-irritant. It's also highly stable and non-irritating. It protects against UVB, UVA II, and UVA I almost uniformly, and is considered to be the broadest range sunscreen available today. The first main difference is that while TiO2 gives a nice broad spectrum protection, Zinc Oxide has an even nicer and even broader spectrum protection. Hyaluronic Acid (Made From Vegetable) (0) Percussionist Mickey Hart later joined the group in 1967 and other members cycled through the group in following years as the core remained intact. I’ll leave off here for now and save my opinion on the shoes themselves for another segment.Amidst the growing counter-culture scene in the San Francisco Bay Area, The Grateful Dead were founded by lead guitarist/vocalist Jerry Garcia, bass player Phil Lesh, rhythm guitarist Bob Weir, keyboardist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and drummer Bill Kreutzmann in Palo Alto in 1965, originally as The Warlocks. The culture is still going strong over 25 years after the band played their final concert, and it shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.īands like the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin may have their symbols, but none are quite as recognizable as the symbols of the Grateful Dead.Įven Nike has gotten in on the hype with their new Grateful Dead bear-inspired SB Dunks, which you can check out below. It’s incredible to see the impact and influence that the Grateful Dead have had on American pop culture, both through their music and the tie-dye tinted art associated with it. This continued for 20+ years after the bear was first introduced, and still continues to this day. All of a sudden people were wearing the bears at Dead shows and elsewhere, and the symbol continued to gain momentum while also being free advertising for the band. Soon fans began to bootleg the original Grateful Dead bears as well as spin-off designs onto t-shirts, stickers, and whatever else they could dream up. It’s easy to see how the symbol became so heavily associated with the band, and have come to represent the music, the energy, and of course, the LSD. So, people were tripping on Owsley’s dancing bear acid while watching the Grateful Dead, who had recently released a live album with the bears on the cover. It’s a lot more fun to imagine the bears dancing along to the music, though, so we’re happy to pretend that Bear never made that distinction.Īfter the release of the album, the dancing bears started appearing on Owsley Stanley’s blotter art, which also happened to be in heavy circulation at Grateful Dead concerts. Stanley later clarified on his website that while the bears are commonly perceived to be dancing, they are actually doing a high step march. There are five different Grateful Dead bears on the album cover, in colors red, orange, yellow, green, and blue, though bears have since appeared in many different colors in different Grateful Dead related artworks. Thomas used that leaden bear as his basis for the design, which features a more cartoon style bear doing the “dancing” motion. As the name implies, the live recordings that appear on the album were hand-picked from Stanley’s personal archives by Owsley himself, with minimal input from the band.īefore the album and the bears, there existed a 36-point lead slug that was used in printing as a font type. The first appearance of the Grateful Dead bears in the public sphere was on the back cover of the Bear’s Choice album. History of the Grateful Dead, Volume 1 (Bear’s Choice) back cover He also designed the Steal Your Face logo in collaboration with Bob Thomas, and the Grateful Dead bears were inspired by his association with the band. That’s a story another day, but basically, Bear Stanley was an extremely important person to both the Grateful Dead and the countercultural movement of the 1960s. Jerry Garcia and the rest of the band didn’t mind, and later encouraged fans to record their shows, and it spread from there. Stanley always recorded soundboard masters when he ran sound at a show, and inevitably the tapes ended up in the hands of Deadheads. In this way, the entire tape trading culture that surrounded the Grateful Dead can be traced back to him. Owsley “Bear” Stanley both engineered and recorded to tape many of the shows that the Grateful Dead performed in the 60s and 70s. Owsley Stanley with Jerry Garcia, late 1960s. In addition to being the band’s sound engineer in the early days, Stanley was also the chemist behind the creation and distribution of a large portion of the LSD that was being consumed in the United States in the 1960s and beyond. Initially designed by artist Bob Thomas to appear on the back cover of the band’s 1973 release, The History of the Grateful Dead, Volume 1 (Bear’s Choice), the bears have become deeply ingrained in the culture surrounding the Grateful Dead, and have taken on layers of symbolic meaning over the years.īefore you understand the full meaning behind the Grateful Dead bears, you have to look at the man who they were designed for: Owsley “Bear” Stanley. Whether or not you consider yourself a Deadhead, you’ve certainly seen the iconic Grateful Dead “dancing bears” a time or two. But I expect they had lots of chances, like us, of turning back, only they didn’t. ‘Folk seem to have been just landed in, usually - their paths were laid that way. As long as we don’t let the world break our spirits, we can always work to improve ourselves, and make our lives the best they can be. We might feel the burden of ageing, or feel like our outward appearances hold us back.īut as long as we have our minds, we cannot be broken. Éowyn fights her way through the world of men Arwen doesn’t abandon a world that seems lost Faramir stands up to his rotten parent and all through Middle-Earth, the good guys never give up what seems like a fight they cannot win.Īt different points in our lives we might find ourselves held back by a physical injury or condition. When all hope seems lost, Frodo and Sam do not give up. Some of his heroes might have great strength, but what sets them apart and what has inspired countless other authors is their courage. Listen to Tolkien, he knew what he was talking about. ‘It is not the strength of the body, but the strength of the spirit.’ – J.R.R. This remains one of the most empowering quotes for women (and a fist-pump moment in Peter Jackson’s movie adaptation), who might be deluded into thinking that the fact that they are not men is a setback being a woman is in itself a strength, as Tolkien so beautifully demonstrated through this one heroic act. Luckily, Tolkien invented the wonderfully strong and complex Éowyn, who follows her uncle Theoden to war to help protect their kingdom, and ends up playing a pivotal role in the great battle for mankind.īecause while Tolkien did not leave many of his great deeds for women, he did give this one huge task to the only female warrior in the saga: because it was said that the Witch-King could fall by the hand of no man – and Éowyn was no man. The Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest works of literature, and yet we are very short on powerful female role models. ‘But no living man am I! You look upon a woman.’ – Éowyn In Fellowship of the Ring, Haldir delivers one of the most profound quotes of the series, talking about the importance of finding the light and love even in a world that is full of grief.Īfter all, sometimes it all seems hopeless, and yet hope is the most important thing we have. Tolkien novels, he had a somewhat bigger role. Lord of the Rings movie fans remember Haldir as the brave elf who tragically died in the battle of Helm’s Deep, but in the J.R.R. ‘The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.’ – Haldir But even if the fate of the world didn’t rest on their shoulders, we bet they’d regret it the minute they crossed the threshold and found themselves back to their boring old lives.īecause if you don’t leave home and embark on your adventure, you will never really live at all. Of course, any of these characters could have just stayed home, or turned back when the going got tough. And yet, these are the stories we all long to be a part of, because there is no greatness and glory without the uncertainty of these winding roads. The main characters (hobbits, mostly) all start their adventures by abandoning the comfort of their own homes in exchange for a winding road of danger, fear and fearsome creatures. Because, ultimately, life in Middle Earth is about one thing: adventure. This quote arguably defines not only The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but all of Tolkien’s works. |
